On November 23rd, Stephen Harper’s secret plan for the CBC was revealed when the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage mused publicly about killing our public broadcaster! You can hear the audio for yourself here.
On Dec 6th, the matter of the government’s plan for the CBC was raised in Parliament. The Heritage Minister was asked to disavow his Parliamentary Secretary’s idea of cutting all funding to the CBC. Twice Minister Moore was asked to dismiss the notion that the government should kill public broadcasting. And, twice he refused to do so. You can see the exchange in the House of Commons here.
It’s widely known that the Prime Minister Harper exercises absolute control of his government’s messaging. None of his Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries or MPs speak out without prior approval from the Prime Minister’s Office.
We recognize the threat posed by Harper could be the most serious peril CBC has ever faced. Now is the time for all of us who love and depend on the CBC to stand up and be counted.

Are you kidding me?
Seriously…if/when the CBC gets back to its roots then I will support it. But right now, they not only get FUNDED by the Canadian Tax payer, they also unfairly sell advertising. No other private broadcaster gets funding, they rely soley on advertising revenues.
Remove the unfair practices, and they will have my support.
Michael, I agree that the CBC needs to return to its roots in more ways than one. The problem you identify is a direct result of chronic underfunding. So, the CBC is in a catch-22 situation. Less public funding = more reliance on private sector advertising dollars = less support from you.
That said, we need to send a message to the Tories who appear to be bent on not only starving the CBC but murdering it outright.
I hope you reconsider your position.
Harper wants to kill the CBC so the right wing will then control ALL the media and their propaganda machine can roll out whatever they want to. Example: the CRTC changing rules so that media can mislead the Canadian public (the reason Sun News was launched to kill the CBC and to give a false news concerning Harpers un Canadian policies and lies). For example, Harper bailed out the banks in 2008 to the tune of 75 Billion dollars with another 125 billion set aside for them. He then has the gaul to say we didn’t bail out our banks. Conservatives represent tye billionaires not the common people. Don’t be fooled!!!
