Hello, my name is Sean wilson,of London Ontario.My brother Mark Wilson was killed by an IED on October 7 of 2006 outside of Kandahar. I came across your article Operation Enduring Shame and it sparked alot of curiousity in me. Canadians dont read alot of this in our media, but since the death of my Brother Ive been trying to justify all of this. Ive been sad and angry for almost six months. There is much, much more, but that should get you started.
The important thing, in my view, is to try and see the war in Afghanistan in a wider context. It goes far beyond the American’s unsuccessful attempt to capture Osama bin Laden. (Bin Laden was an American ally in the fight against Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s — as was Saddam Hussein when Iraq was fighting with Iran during the same period — my, how things change).
The wars that are being fought in that part of the world have a lot to do with oil and little or nothing to do with democracy. The world is running out of oil, and the Americans are desperate to secure as much as they can. Invading Afghanistan to catch Al Queda gave Bush a pretext, but the US has been a big player in that part of the world for decades. Canada was right to refuse to join the war in Iraq, but I’ve often thought that our entry into Afghanistan was a concession made to the US so they wouldn’t harm Canadian interests in other areas. That said, Canada’s arms industry is doing a booming trade selling to our military as well as to the Americans.
