George Galloway pledges to help fund Canada’s peace movement with lawsuit proceeds

In an interview, today, on Winnipeg’s CKUW-FM community radio station, peace and human rights activist George Galloway pledged to spend the proceeds of his lawsuit against the Canadian government to help fund the anti-war movement in this country.

Galloway was interviewed by Jonathan Wilson, co-host of CKUW’s People of Interest program which airs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. at 95.9 on the FM dial. You can listen to the program on line, here. The Galloway segment of today’s program is available here .

In March 2009, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney banned Galloway from entering Canada. The impact, according to Galloway, was severe.

“It may well have contributed to my first ever defeat in an election, in May of this year. My opponents ruthlessly pressed the case that I was a terrorist as officially defined by the government of friendly Canada – a country that most people tend to admire and love . . . It was threatening to my personal security because if I had been what Jason Kenney and his office were telling people I was, then there are lots of people around who are ready to physically harm if not eliminate such a person. It forced me to take all manner of personal security precautions.”

The October 31st Federal Court decision that over-turned the ban, has delighted Galloway. “I’m glad that the honourable judge proved what I had said all along, that Canada remains a country governed by laws rather than the whim of here today and gone tomorrow politicians. So I’m very glad to be back.”

Antisemitism

When asked to comment on the mandate of the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism, which this month hosted a conference in Ottawa of the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism, Galloway was critical.

“Well, it’s all very mysterious. That’s the first point. The Canadian taxpayer paid a pretty penny for this conference, even though they were entirely locked out of it. No media were permitted in it. We have no proper record of who was there. The attendance list even has not been published despite the taxpayer funding the whole thing. And it’s all very mysterious – what it’s all about. And when we’ll see its impact on Canadian public life. But it would be a fair inference that its impact will be malign and that the current assault on free expression on this issue in Canada is going to be intensified as a result of these protocols.

“I don’t think that this kind of secret conclave, coming up with – until now — secret protocols – is going to combat any antisemitism in Canada. As a matter of fact, it’s quite likely to generate greater feelings of enmity, which of course, I would deplore.

“Antisemitism exists. It is a racist phenomenon that has long existed in Christian countries for many, many centuries. Like all forms of racism it must be combated, and combated in the correct way which successfully, hopefully, one day, extinguishes it.

“But the answer to antisemitism is not to stop beating up the Jews and start beating up the Muslims. Instead, the answer is to conduct oneself in an unrelenting campaign against all forms of racism, bigotry and hatred – and that’s what I have done all of my life.

“Insofar as I’ve seen anything from this secret conclave, it attempts something unique in the world – to make Israel the collective Jew. And this, itself, is a racist and therefore antisemitic idea. Israel is not the collective Jew. There is no collective Jew.

“There are huge numbers of Jews who don’t want anything to do with Israel either from religious or secular, progressive standpoints. The population of Israel is not Jewish. There are at least 25 per cent of the population which is not Jewish and no one has the right to collectivize them as Jewish – to do what Lieberman is demanding they do themselves – to sign an oath effectively liquidating their place in the state as first class citizens.

“And of course there are well over two and a half million – in fact, getting on for three million Christians and Muslims living under illegal occupation within the de facto borders of Israel today. And they too cannot be collectivized as Jews by the whim of a secret conclave in Ottawa. So I think it’s all rather disturbing.

“But it raises what we used to call the $64,000 question, which is: Why is Canada doing this? Why has Canada become this monomaniacal supporter of the most extreme forms of support for Israel? Why has Canada allowed itself to become effectively an embassy for Netanyahu in the world?

“It’s certainly not in Canada’s interest. I don’t believe it’s in the interests of the Jews of the world. And I don’t even believe it’s in the interests of the State of Israel. And it goes without saying it’s certainly not in the interests of the region as a whole and peace in the world.”

Canada in Afghanistan

Galloway was asked about Canada’s role in Afghanistan now that the Harper government has announced troops will be staying until 2014 in a training capacity.

“Well I wondering when the people of Canada are going to ask how come these Afghans need so much training. That’s 10 years of training with no noticeable improvement in theatre. No one is training these Taliban and they seem to be doing remarkably well, so I’m wondering just how long you are going to keep on using your tax dollars and risk the blood of your sons in order to “train” the armed forces of a corrupt and discredited administration of Hamid Karzai.

“Second, I don’t think you should fool yourself that the Afghans resisting foreign occupation regard these soldiers as only trainers. In fact, any foreigner who is participating in the occupation of Afghanistan is, in fact, in a very life-threatening, endangered situation. And I pray that you don’t add to the very considerable death toll amongst Canadian soldiers that you already have, because I don’t believe that Hamid Karzai’s administration is worth another drop of Canadian blood, or anyone else’s blood for that matter.

“So I think it’s a very serious mistake. Again, it’s done for political reasons, to continue to provide cover for the war, so as not to add to the run on the credibility bank which is already underway in the world about this war – and I very much hope that Canada doesn’t pay a further price for this.”

George Galloway will be speaking in Winnipeg on Nov. 26, 2010. Click here for details. Details of the national tour are available here.

  1. Margot Izard says:

Thanks, Paul, for the interview AND the transcript, which I found through a link on babble.ca, and will pass on.

Community radio makes my heart sing, ah. Eight of the best years of my life!

Who gave George the Olympics booster mitts? Oh dear.

Are you going to tape and broadcast his speech in Winnipeg? I hope someone from Vancouver Cooperative Radio did the Vancouver event last night. He’s so hot right now, and just what people need to hear.

    M

  2. webmaster says:

His speech will be recorded in audio (CKUW-FM) and video for YouTube broadcast. I’ll post the details when I have them. I don’t know who gave him the mitts.

  3. aesop says:

    “…Jason Kenney banned Galloway…”
The usual ‘peace and justice’ lie. GG was told that he might be inadmissable as a result of giving aid/cash to the terrorist entity Hamas, (which had murdered hundreds and mutilated thousands, before the Protection Wall was built). For proof of that, see GG’s videos of him in Gaza, handing over wads of cash to Hamas’s leaders, to use as they see fit.

“The impact, according to Galloway, was severe.” Puffery.

“…may well have…” is not something you can take to court, you have to show substantive evidence.

“…I was a terrorist as officially defined…” Please quote the ‘statement’ from Kenney, not what ‘ruthless opponents’ said.
Giving aid to an entity defined by the Canadian government (and other governments) as a terrorist organization [better: ‘An organization which finances, supports, trains, carries out, and applauds acts of terrorism.’] should make you a person inadmissable to Canada? Probably not, if you are Paul Graham or of similar inclinations. The NDP, Unions, Professors…?

“…threatening…if I had been…lots of people around…eliminate such a person.” How about some quotes?
How many reproducible death threats can GG show?
Like Geert Wilders has, even a rap threat!

“…all manner of personal security precautions.”
    Again, please detail same.

“We have no proper record of who was there.”
We? How long has GG been a Canadian citizen?

    GG: “— secret protocols – ”
Obviously: “The Secret Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion”.
One of histories ORIGINAL propaganda pieces, published by the Tsar of Russia’s Secret Police – Okhrana – around 1903. It is the jew-bashing text par excellence: quoted by Henry Ford, Adolf Hitler (Mein Kampf), and approved by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Among others. Some people say the Protocols were ‘forged’, but that’s only as forging or creating something out of whole cloth. There never was an original to forge as in fake copy.

Where do Paul Graham and Margot ‘More, More, More’ Izard stand on ‘The Protocols’, and GG’s pathetic allusion to them?

  4. webmaster says:

    My dear aesop,

I suggest you gain a fuller understanding of Mr. Galloway’s feelings about Hamas by watching the video of his Winnipeg speech available on this site. He’s not as fond of them as you seem to believe.

Regarding “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion,” – it’s an antisemitic, and therefore, a racist publication. Racism must be exposed and opposed wherever it appears. That is my position. That is Mr. Galloway’s position. And, I’m confident, it is your position, unless you believe it is Israel’s god-given right to occupy Palestinian land and treat Palestinians as second-class citizens.

As for Mr. Galloway’s alleged allusion to an antisemitic tract — it’s quite a stretch. I don’t accept your argument. The word “protocol” is used quite widely in a variety of settings. According to Dictionary.com, it has a multitude of applications:

    1. the customs and regulations dealing with diplomatic formality, precedence, and etiquette.
    2. an original draft, minute, or record from which a document, esp. a treaty, is prepared.
    3. a supplementary international agreement.
    4. an agreement between states.
    5. an annex to a treaty giving data relating to it.
    6. Medicine/Medical: the plan for carrying out a scientific study or a patient’s treatment regimen.
    7. Computers: a set of rules governing the format of messages that are exchanged between computers.
    8. Also called protocol statement, protocol sentence, protocol proposition. Philosophy: a statement reporting an observation or experience in the most fundamental terms without interpretation: sometimes taken as the basis of empirical verification, as of scientific laws.

Thank you for visiting and commenting. I hope you return and continue the discussion.

  5. aesop says:

    My Dear Paul,

I suggest you gain a fuller understanding of Hamas by reading their Charter.

    Article 32: [centre]
“For Zionist scheming has no end, and after Palestine they will covet expansion from the Nile to the Euphrates. Only when they have completed digesting the area on which they will have laid their hand, they will look forward to more expansion, etc. Their scheme has been laid out in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and their present [conduct] is the best proof of what is said there.”

You have stated that The Protocols is an antisemitic, racist document. Well here it is embedded in Hamas’s Charter. And here is Protocol content in detail. Sorry it’s so long.

    “Article Twenty-Two:

For a long time, the enemies have been planning, skillfully and with precision, for the achievement of what they have attained. They took into consideration the causes affecting the current of events. They strived to amass great and substantive material wealth which they devoted to the realisation of their dream. With their money, they took control of the world media, news agencies, the press, publishing houses, broadcasting stations, and others. With their money they stirred revolutions in various parts of the world with the purpose of achieving their interests and reaping the fruit therein. They were behind the French Revolution, the Communist revolution and most of the revolutions we heard and hear about, here and there. With their money they formed secret societies, such as Freemasons, Rotary Clubs, the Lions and others in different parts of the world for the purpose of sabotaging societies and achieving Zionist interests. With their money they were able to control imperialistic countries and instigate them to colonize many countries in order to enable them to exploit their resources and spread corruption there.

You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it.”
Freemasons, Rotarians and Lions too; do they not do charitable works for the poor and needy?

Some say, read what they are saying,
    here’s one, a year old:

    “Terror Online

Hamas-affiliated website offers money for murder of soldiers

Many Israelis receive message in their e-mail inbox containing link to website offering $500 reward in exchange for murdering an Israeli soldier. Online terrorist made similar provocations in the past

    Ilana Brudo
    Published: 01.03.10, 23:08 / Israel News

“Kill the troops and get your money back. This is our motto.” This message was sent Sunday to many Israelis via e-mail…”

    So, two simple questions:
Have PSG and PAW members read Hamas’s Charter?
Do you/they still support Hamas, directly, or through Galloway?

    • webmaster says:

Aesop old chap, while I imagine PAW members would tend to agree with me in general terms, I will address your questions on my own behalf. If you have questions for Peace Alliance Winnipeg, I suggest you send them directly.

      1. I have read the 1988 Hamas charter document. Briefly, it supports an Islamist vision of Palestine and a racist view of Jews based on the fraudulent, antisemitic tract entitled “Protocols of the Elders of Zion.” It is not a document that could be supported by anyone who claims to work for peace, social justice or democracy.

      2. I do not support Hamas, directly or indirectly. I never have. I would never choose to live in an absolutist, theocratic society of any kind. I reject terrorism in all of its forms.

I seriously doubt that you will find any peace activists who support terrorism, whether it originates with Hamas, the Israeli government or the usual “great power” suspects.

Your continued attempt to smear peace activists distracts from a discussion of the real issues that undermine world peace.

In the interests of advancing the discussion along productive lines, why don’t you identify yourself and put forward your solution to bringing peace to Israelis and Palestinians?

  6. aesop says:

Paul old chap, I will not say that you have a right to your opinion, because that would imply that I have some influence or input regarding your right. I don’t have.
But I have the right to disagree with your OPINION.

“As for Mr. Galloway’s alleged allusion to an antisemitic tract — it’s quite a stretch. I don’t accept your argument.”

Galloway is an extremely clever chooser and user of words.
He knows absolutely about The Protocols, and if he doesn’t know how popular they are among the 57 members of the O.I.C. (e.g. published by the Egyption government press) he is singularly ill-informed about the people he claims to be aiding. Even if he claims to be helping ‘ordinary’ non-Hamas Gazans he should know that a majority of them believe The Protocols are real and true. Further, if he hasn’t read the Charter of Hamas with its jew (AND christian) hatred, he has no business doing business with them. And if he has read it he has no business doing business with them!

“Your continued attempt to smear peace activists distracts from a discussion of the real issues that undermine world peace.”

Please point out said ‘smears’, I can’t see what you are referring to. Really. But here is one left leaning blog I came across. Do you agree with them? Should anyone draw attention to intemperate, possibly biassed opinions? Would that be smearing?

    http://dissidentvoice.org/2010/10/israel-is-the-most-immediate-threat-to-the-future-of-the-planet/

    • webmaster says:

      Good morning, Aesop.

Your question “Do you/they still support Hamas . . .” implies a smear, in my view.

Regarding the blog you referred to: Do I “agree with them?” Heavens! They cover a lot of ground. That is an impossible question to answer.

Were you referring to the interview with Jeffrey Blankfort entitled “Israel Is the Most Immediate Threat to the Future of the Planet”? Again, it covers a lot of ground. Which part?

I’m inclined to think the title of the article, which appears to reflect Blankfort’s thinking, is wrong. There are far more immediate threats to the world’s future than Israel’s regressive policies. Chief among these would be the slow-motion collapse of the American economy as the US tries vainly to secure hegemony by fighting wars and maintaining a military machine it cannot afford. History has not been kind to collapsing empires. They tend to kill a lot of people as they thrash about in their final agonies.

I asked you two questions which you have not addressed. Perhaps you could reply to them in your next visit to my humble blog.

      1. What is your suggestion for bringing about Israeli-Palestinian peace?

      2. Unless identifying yourself would place you in danger, it seems only fair that you step out from behind your nom de plume. Who are you?

      Cheers,
      PSG

  7. aesop says:

    Good morning Paul,

I also asked you previously, about your suggestions as to how a state protects its its citizens from terrorists and anarchists, without commiting suicide at the same time. If you know of one country out the 200, or someone’s theory as to how to do that, the entire Internet would like to know. Serously. No sarcasm.

As to your questions, I have no answers, same as yourself.
If the best minds in the world have not managed in 60 years,
I will claim no insight. I have none.
But if you read your postings re Israel, with their finger pointing and blaming, you will not be able to contribute.

If you support the Gazans right to democracy, then you cannot not support their chosen representatives? Hamas are their representives. If you wish to give them aid, it goes to Hamas.
The Gazans freely chose Hamas with its openly published (since 1988), genocidal Charter, and with its track record of hundreds of cold blooded and premeditated murders and thousands of maimings.
That is, before the Protection Wall went up.
So one possible idea would be for Hamas to tear up that hate filled document, and, if it needs a charter, to write one about a peaceful two state solution. I won’t hold my breath.

And what difference would it make, if I used my real name?
I have received a veiled threat from a nutcase who’s avatar name is Gordon Duff, and who has no apparent existence, according to all web resources, except for the delusional stuff he writes himself.

  8. J says:

    Would you two stop bickering?

This guy is EXACTLY what Canada needs right now. Having just spent the last two years of my life living and working in the UK and seeing how the world works over there, I’m far more in-tune with how much Canada is following suit. I, for one, never want that to happen. The Harper government was one of the worst tragedies of modern Canada (twice). I wished there could have been a coalition because more Canadians voted against Harper than they did for him. I wish we had a proportional representation system. Whenever I saw Canada on the UK news, it was so American. Shame. Although I don’t want Canada to turn into the ultra-human-rights-everyone-takes-the-piss kind of country that is the UK, Canada needs this guy and many more like him.

  9. aesop says:

    @J

    “Would you two stop bickering?”
Sure. Your opinion on Harper and the UK are more important than this ‘bicker’ on Hamas:

“The Gazans freely chose Hamas with its openly published (since 1988), genocidal Charter, and with its track record of hundreds of cold blooded and premeditated murders and thousands of maimings.”

    And this on the UK:
